From 424 responses, we found 8.3-percent rate of tertiary care of patients with post-LASIK retinal lesions, referred by anterior segment surgeons. The study focused on eyes with post-LASIK retinal lesions such as retinal detachments and retinal breaks, that also had pre-LASIK lesions such as retinal breaks and lattice degeneration. She developed a new superior nasal retinal tear and a retinal hole adjacent to the lattice patch associated with a nasal and partial temporal retinal detachment in the same eye two months after LASIK. This 34-year-old woman underwent prophylactic laser treatment for a superior retinal tear and an adjacent patch of lattice degeneration before LASIK for her left eye. New retinal breaks close to old tear after LASIK. Our purpose was to explore any relationship between LASIK patients' postop retinal lesions and their pre-LASIK vitreoretinal pathology, and assess the role of retinal exam for LASIK eyes.įigure 1. Last year, my colleagues and I surveyed more than 1,250 vitreoretinal surgeons worldwide to assess aspects of their experience over the past 10 years with LASIK patients. ![]() This article highlights some important issues in the pre- and postop management of LASIK patients, in particular, those with a history of retinal lesions before LASIK surgery. Given the sheer volume of LASIK worldwide, however, and the major impact that such complications may have on visual outcomes, ophthalmologists must be attuned to the potential retinal issues that may arise. There are relatively few reports of vitreoretinal complications after LASIK.
